Calcium Phosphate dibasic dihydrate uses in tablets

Calcium phosphate dibasic dihydrate is used as an excipient in pharmaceutical products and it is also used in dietary supplements as a source of calcium. It is also called DCP or dibasic calcium phosphate. Dibasic calcium phosphate is an insoluble and inorganic excipient.

Main Uses:

  • It is used as a tablet diluent.
  • It is also used as a capsule diluent.

Other Uses:

  • It is used in toothpaste.
  • Used as a food additive.
  • It is used in poultry feed.

Note

  • Calcium phosphate dibasic dihydrate is non-hygroscopic and is stable, but some time on specific conditions it may lose water of crystallization.
  • DCP needs a swelling type of disintegrant when used as diluent.

Grades Of DCP

It has two grades

  • Coarse grade
  • Milled grade

Milled grades are used as a diluent  in wet granulation and dry granulation

The coarse grade is used as a diluent in dry granulation because it has good flow properties.

Properties

  • Dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate or
  • DCP has good compaction properties.
  • DCP coarse grade deform by a brittle fracture.
  • Dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate or DCP is abrasive

Incompatible

Dibasic calcium phosphate dihydrate is incompatible with following,

  • Aspirin
  • Ampicillin antibiotic
  • Aspartame a sweetener
  • Erythromycin antibiotic

DCP has an alkaline surface so it should not be used with alkaline pH-sensitive drugs.
